A safe, quick, minimally invasive surgery to correct a groin hernia in children — one of the most common pediatric surgical procedures, with a very high success rate and fast recovery.
An inguinal hernia occurs when a small portion of tissue, often part of the intestine, pushes through a weak spot in the abdominal wall near the groin. In children, this usually happens because a small passage that normally closes before or shortly after birth remains open. It appears as a soft bulge in the groin, or in boys, sometimes extending into the scrotum, that may become more noticeable when a child cries, coughs, or strains.
Unlike some conditions that can be watched and monitored, inguinal hernias in children do not resolve on their own and carry a real risk of the tissue becoming trapped (incarcerated), which is why surgical repair is generally recommended once a hernia is diagnosed, even in very young infants.
A pediatric surgeon will recommend repair if your child has:
A visible bulge in the groin that comes and goes, often more noticeable when crying or straining
Swelling extending into the scrotum in boys
A hernia confirmed on physical examination by a pediatrician or surgeon
Discomfort or irritability that seems linked to the bulge
A bulge that becomes firm, red, or tender, which needs urgent evaluation
A premature birth history, since hernias are more common in premature infants
The surgical approach depends on your child's age, hernia size, and whether both sides need repair.
A small incision is made in the groin to close the open passage. This is the traditional, well-established approach and remains extremely common and effective.
Performed through tiny incisions using a camera and specialised instruments, offering the added benefit of checking the opposite side for a hidden hernia in the same procedure.
If hernias are found on both sides, especially common in premature infants, both can be repaired in the same surgical session.
Unlike some pediatric conditions, waiting is not generally a safe option for inguinal hernias.
| Approach | Invasiveness | Outcome | Risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| Elective Surgical Repair | Minor surgical (day-care) | Definitive, permanent correction | Low; standard anaesthesia and surgical risks apply |
| Watchful Waiting | None | Hernia will not close on its own | Increasing risk of incarceration (trapped, dangerous bulge) over time |
| Emergency Repair | Urgent surgical | Needed if a hernia becomes incarcerated | Higher risk than a planned, elective procedure |
A quick, well-established procedure with a strong track record of safety.
Your surgeon confirms the diagnosis through examination, and an anaesthesia check-up ensures your child is fit for the procedure.
Your child fasts for a set number of hours before surgery, as instructed by the anaesthesia team.
Performed under general anaesthesia, the procedure typically takes 30–45 minutes. The opening is closed and reinforced through a small incision, leaving a minimal, well-hidden scar.
Most children go home the same day, once fully awake and comfortable, with clear pain management and wound care instructions.
A common surgery that still deserves precise technique and a calm, reassuring experience for your child.
Surgeons trained specifically in pediatric hernia repair, including in infants and premature babies.
A gentle, family-friendly approach from consultation through to discharge.
Laparoscopic techniques available for faster recovery and less scarring where appropriate.
Detailed aftercare instructions so parents feel confident managing recovery at home.
Consultations available at Kalyan Nagar, RT Nagar and Malleshwaram.
Recovery is generally quick, with mild soreness around the incision site for a few days, managed easily with prescribed pain relief. Most children return to their normal activity levels within a week, though your surgeon may recommend avoiding strenuous play or sports for 2–3 weeks to allow complete healing.
The success rate for pediatric hernia repair is very high, with recurrence being uncommon. Contact your surgeon if you notice increasing redness, swelling, fever, or the wound doesn't seem to be healing as expected.
