Fast, expert surgical treatment for appendicitis in children — one of the most common pediatric surgical emergencies, with prompt care essential for a smooth, uncomplicated recovery.
An appendectomy is the surgical removal of the appendix, a small, finger-shaped pouch attached to the large intestine. When the appendix becomes inflamed or infected, a condition called appendicitis, it can cause severe pain and, if untreated, may rupture, leading to a more serious infection in the abdomen.
Appendicitis is one of the most common reasons for emergency abdominal surgery in children, and prompt diagnosis and surgical removal is the standard, most effective treatment. Because the appendix has no essential function that's missed after removal, an appendectomy resolves the problem completely.
Seek prompt medical evaluation if your child shows:
Pain starting near the belly button that moves to the lower right side of the abdomen
Pain that worsens with movement, coughing, or pressing on the abdomen
Loss of appetite alongside abdominal pain
Nausea or vomiting following the onset of abdominal pain
Low-grade fever accompanying the pain
A child who prefers to lie still, since movement worsens the pain
The surgical approach depends on how the appendicitis presents and the surgeon's assessment.
The preferred, minimally invasive approach in most cases, using small incisions, a camera, and specialised instruments, offering less pain and a quicker recovery.
A single larger incision is used, generally reserved for cases where the appendix has already ruptured, or when a laparoscopic approach isn't suitable for other reasons.
In select complicated cases, initial treatment with antibiotics may be given first, followed by a planned appendectomy weeks later once inflammation has settled.
Here's how the two main surgical approaches compare.
| Approach | Incisions | Recovery | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|
| Laparoscopic | Several small incisions | Faster, less post-operative pain | Most cases of appendicitis |
| Open | One larger incision | Slightly longer recovery | Ruptured appendix or complex cases |
Since appendicitis is time-sensitive, this process moves quickly from diagnosis to treatment.
A physical examination, blood tests, and often an ultrasound or CT scan are used to confirm the diagnosis quickly, since timely treatment matters.
Your child is prepared for surgery, often with IV fluids and, if needed, antibiotics started before the procedure.
Performed under general anaesthesia, the appendix is removed, most often laparoscopically. The procedure typically takes 30–60 minutes, depending on complexity.
Most children stay for a day or two for monitoring. Those with a straightforward, non-ruptured appendicitis often recover faster than those with a ruptured appendix, who may need a longer hospital stay and a course of antibiotics.
Speed and precision matter most in a surgical emergency like appendicitis.
Rapid access to pediatric surgeons when appendicitis is suspected, day or night.
Surgeons experienced in both straightforward and complex, ruptured appendicitis cases.
Laparoscopic surgery favoured for faster recovery and less scarring wherever appropriate.
Compassionate care through what can be a frightening, sudden experience for children and parents alike.
Emergency and surgical care available at Kalyan Nagar, RT Nagar and Malleshwaram.
Recovery from a straightforward laparoscopic appendectomy is generally quick, with many children returning to normal activities within a week or two. Mild soreness around the small incision sites is expected and manageable with prescribed pain relief.
If the appendix had ruptured before surgery, recovery may take longer and could involve a longer hospital stay and a course of antibiotics to fully clear the infection. Your surgeon will provide a specific recovery timeline based on what was found during surgery.
