A child's heart is different from an adult's, and so are its problems. Many heart murmurs and racing hearts are harmless, but some signs need expert attention. Below is a plain-language guide to what parents and school doctors commonly notice, grouped the way our pediatric cardiologists think about them.
Breathing & feeding
Rapid or laboured breathing, especially during feeds
Sweating heavily during feeding in a newborn
Baby getting tired or pausing often during a feed
Poor weight gain despite good appetite
Blue tinge on lips, tongue or fingertips
Heart sounds
A heart murmur picked up during a routine check-up
A heartbeat that feels too fast, slow or irregular
Palpitations or a feeling of the heart "racing"
Known or suspected congenital heart defect
Abnormal findings on a prenatal scan
Activity & stamina
Getting breathless or tired much faster than other children
Needing to rest while playing or climbing stairs
Chest pain, dizziness or fainting during exercise or sport
Trouble keeping up at PE class or school sport
Pre-sports evaluation before competitive activity
Family history
A family history of congenital heart disease
Sudden cardiac death in a close relative at a young age
Family history of high cholesterol or early heart disease
Genetic syndromes with known heart links (e.g. Down syndrome)
Follow-up after Kawasaki disease or rheumatic fever
Older children
Chest pain, especially during physical activity
Fainting or near-fainting spells
High blood pressure found during a routine check
Swollen feet, ankles or abnormal pulses
Clearance needed before any surgery
You don't need a referral. If any of these signs sound familiar, or if a pediatrician has suggested a cardiac check, a short pediatric cardiology consultation can bring you clarity and peace of mind.
Why early heart checks matter
Many congenital heart defects are easier to treat the earlier they are found. Even simple heart murmurs deserve a confirmation that the heart is structurally normal. Early evaluation protects your child's growth, prevents complications, and often gives families the biggest relief of all — reassurance.
What to bring to the visit
Any previous ECG, echo, X-ray or test reports, past prescriptions, prenatal scan reports if available, and a note of what you've been noticing at home or in school. A short mobile video of unusual breathing or episodes is very helpful.
From a simple heart murmur to complex congenital heart defects, our pediatric cardiology team cares for your child's heart from the womb through the teenage years.
Diagnosis and management of heart defects present from birth, including ASD, VSD, PDA, Tetralogy of Fallot and complex single-ventricle conditions.
Evaluation of innocent and pathological murmurs with echocardiography, so you know exactly what's going on.
Diagnosis and treatment of fast, slow or irregular heartbeats including SVT, long QT syndrome and palpitations.
Treatment and long-term follow-up for Kawasaki disease, rheumatic fever and valve problems.
Evaluation of high blood pressure in children and teens, with lifestyle plans and treatment where needed.
Fetal echo for babies before birth, pre-sports participation screening for young athletes, and heart clearance before any planned surgery.
Every test is painless, child-friendly and planned to be as quick and comfortable as possible.
A painless ultrasound of the heart that gives a live picture of its structure and function.
A simple recording of the heart's electrical activity to check for arrhythmias and heart block.
To see how the heart responds to exercise, especially useful for symptoms during sport.
Detailed heart scan for the baby during pregnancy when a defect is suspected or at high risk.
Treatment is tailored to your child, often starting simple and only escalating when truly needed.
Our goal isn't only a healthy heart today. It's a child who runs, plays and lives fully, and parents who feel confident about every follow-up.
Knowing what happens next makes the day easier for you and your child.

Pediatric cardiology at Kalyan Nagar, RT Nagar, Malleswaram and New BEL Road.

The right pediatric cardiologist is one who treats only children and understands how a child's heart differs from an adult's. At Shishuka Children's Hospital, our pediatric cardiology team cares for newborns, children and teens with heart murmurs, congenital defects, arrhythmias and more, using child-sized diagnostic tools. You can meet our team at Kalyan Nagar, RT Nagar, Malleswaram and New BEL Road.
Book a pediatric cardiologist if your child has a heart murmur, chest pain, fainting spells, breathlessness during play, poor weight gain, bluish lips, or a family history of heart disease. Also for prenatal scan findings, pre-sport screening, or pre-surgical clearance. Many of these turn out to be harmless, but a proper check gives you certainty.
No. Many children have "innocent murmurs" that are completely harmless and go away on their own. However, some murmurs point to an underlying heart defect, so an echocardiogram is often done to confirm. At Shishuka in Bangalore, our pediatric cardiologists can tell the difference quickly and reassure most families during the first visit itself.
Not at all. A pediatric echo is painless, non-invasive and uses sound waves (ultrasound) to create a live picture of the heart. The child lies still for about 20 to 30 minutes while a small probe moves gently across the chest. There is no radiation, no injection and no discomfort. Younger babies are often fed or kept comfortable to help them stay still.
