Fill in your details to get started
A quick, minimally invasive test that identifies exactly what's triggering your child's asthma, allergies or breathing symptoms — dust, pollen, pet dander and more — with results in under an hour.
A skin prick test is a simple allergy test in which tiny drops of common allergens, such as dust mites, pollen, pet dander, or certain foods, are placed on the skin, usually on the forearm or back. The skin is then gently pricked through each drop with a small, painless device, allowing a tiny amount of the allergen to enter just under the surface.
If your child is allergic to a particular substance, a small, itchy bump similar to a mosquito bite appears at that spot within 15–20 minutes. This test is one of the most reliable ways to pinpoint exactly what's triggering asthma symptoms, allergic rhinitis, or eczema, so avoidance strategies and treatment can be targeted rather than guessed at.
A pediatric pulmonologist or allergist may recommend this test if your child has:
Asthma symptoms that seem to worsen around specific environments or seasons
Allergic rhinitis — frequent sneezing, a blocked or runny nose, or itchy eyes
Breathing symptoms that flare with dust, pollution, or exposure to pets
Persistent eczema with a suspected allergic trigger
Suspected food allergies causing skin, digestive or respiratory reactions
Asthma that's difficult to control despite regular medication, where identifying triggers could help
Depending on your child's symptoms, one or more of these approaches may be used.
Tests common environmental triggers like dust mites, pollen, mould and pet dander, the most frequent culprits behind asthma and allergic rhinitis.
Screens for reactions to common food allergens, useful when a food trigger is suspected alongside respiratory or skin symptoms.
A blood-based alternative used when skin testing isn't suitable, such as with certain skin conditions or medications that interfere with results.
Measures overall allergic tendency in the blood, sometimes used alongside specific allergen testing for a fuller picture.
Here's how the skin prick test compares to other ways of identifying allergy triggers.
| Investigation | Invasiveness | Best For | Limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Skin Prick Test | Minimally invasive | Fast, reliable results across multiple allergens at once | Needs to pause certain antihistamines beforehand |
| Specific IgE Blood Test | Minimally invasive | Children with skin conditions or on medications affecting skin testing | Results take longer; single blood draw needed |
| Elimination Diet | Non-invasive | Confirming a suspected food trigger over time | Slower; requires careful tracking and often confirmatory testing |
| Oral Food Challenge | Supervised, minimally invasive | Confirming or ruling out a food allergy definitively | Time-consuming; done under medical supervision for safety |
A quick, well-tolerated process, even for younger children.
Your doctor reviews symptoms and history to select the most relevant allergens to test, and confirms whether any current medications, such as antihistamines, need to be paused beforehand.
Small drops of different allergen extracts are placed in a grid pattern on the forearm or back.
A tiny, painless device gently pricks the skin through each drop, just enough to let a small amount of allergen in without drawing blood.
After 15–20 minutes, the skin is checked for reactions. Your doctor reviews the results with you the same visit and discusses a plan to avoid confirmed triggers.
Accurate results and clear guidance on what to actually do with them once triggers are identified.
Testing performed and interpreted by professionals experienced in pediatric allergy and asthma care.
Results available in under an hour, so you leave with answers, not another appointment to wait for.
A quick, minimally invasive test that most children tolerate well, without needles or sedation.
Clear, actionable advice on managing confirmed triggers at home and school, not just a list of results.
Available at Kalyan Nagar, RT Nagar, Malleswaram and New BEL Road.
There's no recovery time needed — your child can return to normal activities right away. The small, itchy bumps at test sites typically fade within a few hours, and applying a cool compress can help if they're bothersome.
If specific triggers are identified, your doctor will guide you on practical steps for reducing exposure, alongside any medication adjustments needed to keep symptoms under control going forward.
