A painless, essential test to check how well your child hears — helping catch hearing loss early, at any age, so speech and language development stay on track.
A pediatric hearing test (audiometry) measures how well a child can hear sounds at different pitches and volumes. Because a child's hearing directly shapes how they learn to speak, understand language, and engage socially, catching hearing problems early is one of the most important things a parent can do — and one of the easiest to overlook, since young children can't always tell you something sounds different.
The right test depends entirely on your child's age, since a newborn obviously can't respond to instructions the way a five-year-old can. Pediatric audiologists use age-specific methods to get accurate, reliable results at every stage.
A hearing test may be recommended if your child shows:
Not startling at loud sounds as a young infant
Delayed speech or unclear words compared to other children the same age
Not responding consistently to their name or spoken instructions
Turning up the TV or device volume unusually high
A history of frequent ear infections or persistent middle ear fluid
Not passing a newborn hearing screening
The right test is chosen based on your child's age and ability to respond to instructions.
Used for newborns and infants. A tiny probe placed in the ear measures echo-like sounds the inner ear produces in response to clicks — the baby simply needs to be still or asleep.
Used for toddlers and young children. Sounds are played through speakers or headphones, and the child's natural response — turning toward a sound, or responding to a game-like cue — is observed and recorded.
Used for older children who can follow instructions reliably. The child wears headphones and presses a button or raises a hand when a sound is heard, at various pitches and volumes.
Not a hearing test itself, but often done alongside one to check how well the eardrum moves, which helps identify fluid build-up or middle ear problems contributing to hearing loss.
Here's a quick guide to which test suits which age group.
| Test | Typical Age | Best For | Limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| OAE Test | Newborns – 6 months | Universal newborn hearing screening | Can be affected by ear canal debris or fluid |
| Behavioural Audiometry | 6 months – 4 years | Toddlers not yet able to follow instructions | Requires patience; results less precise than pure tone testing |
| Pure Tone Audiometry | 4 years and older | Precise, ear-specific hearing measurement | Requires the child's active cooperation |
| Tympanometry | Any age | Checking for middle ear fluid or eardrum issues | Doesn't measure hearing sensitivity itself |
A completely painless process, adapted to keep things simple and even fun for your child.
The doctor first checks the ear canal and eardrum for wax, fluid or other visible issues that could affect results.
Depending on age, your child either rests quietly during an OAE test, responds to sounds in a play-based behavioural test, or wears headphones for pure tone testing in a sound-treated room.
A quick, additional check of eardrum movement is often done in the same sitting to rule out fluid or middle ear issues.
Results are often available the same day. If hearing loss is identified, your specialist explains the type and degree, and discusses next steps such as monitoring, medical treatment, or hearing support options.
Reliable results depend on the right test, chosen and administered correctly for your child's age.
The right test chosen for your child's exact developmental stage, from newborn to teenager.
Testing conducted and results interpreted by professionals experienced with children's unique needs.
A relaxed, non-threatening environment that keeps younger children engaged rather than anxious.
Findings explained in plain language, with a clear plan for next steps if any concerns are found.
Consultations available across Kalyan Nagar, RT Nagar, Malleshwaram and New BEL Road.
A hearing test is completely non-invasive with no recovery needed — your child can go straight back to their day. Results are usually available the same visit, since most pediatric hearing tests don't require lab processing.
If a hearing concern is identified, early support, whether medical treatment, monitoring, or hearing aids, makes a meaningful difference to speech and language development. Repeat testing may be recommended periodically, especially for children with a history of ear infections.

Most babies get a newborn hearing screening within the first few weeks. Beyond that, testing is recommended anytime there's a concern about speech delay, response to sound, or after frequent ear infections.
No, completely painless — just listening to sounds through headphones or small ear probes.
Typically 15–30 minutes, depending on age and the specific test.
Yes, many causes are treatable or manageable, from simple ear wax removal or fluid treatment, to hearing aids for permanent loss.
