If it feels like your child is "always" getting a cold, the numbers back that up: healthy young children typically catch six to eight colds a year, and more if they're in daycare or school around other children. It's not a sign of a weak immune system — it's a sign of an immune system that's still building its library of germs it recognizes.

A cold is a mild viral infection of the nose and throat. There's no cure for it and, importantly, no antibiotic that treats it — colds are viral, and antibiotics only work on bacteria. The entire treatment plan for an ordinary cold is comfort and time.

The part that trips parents up isn't the cold itself, it's telling an ordinary cold apart from something that needs a doctor's attention. That distinction is really the whole point of this guide.

What a Typical Cold Looks Like

Runny or blocked nose, sneezing, a mild sore throat, a cough, and sometimes a low-grade fever in the first day or two. Symptoms usually build over two to three days, peak, and then ease off over a week to ten days. Nasal discharge often changes color from clear to yellow or green partway through — on its own, that color change is a normal part of a cold healing, not a sign of a bacterial infection needing antibiotics.

Children under 3 tend to get colds more often and recover a little more slowly than older children, simply because they're encountering more new viruses for the first time.

When a "Cold" Needs a Doctor's Look

Any cold symptoms in a baby under 3 months are worth a pediatrician call, since infants can go from mild congestion to breathing difficulty faster than older children.

Fast or labored breathing, chest that pulls in with each breath, or flaring nostrils at any age needs same-day medical evaluation — these are signs the airway is working harder than it should.

Ear pain, or pulling at one ear, especially alongside cold symptoms, often points to an ear infection layered on top of the cold, which a pediatrician should check directly.

Symptoms that improve, then suddenly get worse again, or a fever that returns after a few fever-free days, can signal a secondary infection rather than the original cold running its course.

A cough or congestion lasting beyond 10–14 days without any improvement is reasonable grounds for a check-up, even without other alarming signs.

Basic Home Care That Actually Helps

Keep fluids coming. Water, milk, or diluted juice loosens mucus and prevents dehydration, which matters more than any medicine on the shelf.

Clear a blocked nose before feeds and sleep. Saline drops followed by gentle suction work well for infants who can't blow their own nose yet; a humidifier in the room can ease congestion for any age.

Let them rest as much as they want to. There's no need to force bed rest if a child feels well enough to potter around — energy levels are a decent guide to how they're actually feeling.

Skip over-the-counter cold and cough medicines in children under 4 unless your pediatrician has specifically recommended one. Most aren't proven to help at that age and carry real dosing risks. A Few Habits That Cut Down How Often Colds Happen

Regular handwashing is still the single most effective habit, for children and for whoever cares for them — colds spread mainly through hands touching the eyes, nose, or mouth after contact with a contaminated surface.

Keeping a sick child home from daycare or school while symptoms are active protects classmates, and shared items like cups and toothbrushes are worth keeping separate during an active cold in the household.

Myth: Cold weather itself causes colds. Colds are caused by viruses, not temperature — the reason they cluster in cooler months is that people spend more time indoors, in closer contact, which is where viruses actually spread.
